JDSU User Interface

JDSU (now Viavi Solutions) was a leading provider of products for optical communications networks, communications test and measurement equipment and other custom optics. From year 2013 to 2015, I worked together with my creative director and the client on two interface design projects for JDSU. We carried the same design language and a similar style sheet through these two projects, while doing our best to optimize the user experience.

iPad Application Interface Design

Process

We started with a few screens from the client’s prototype, analyzed and rearranged the sections to clean up the interface and clarify their functions.

We designed an accordion menu for the main navigation at the top, in an attempt to save screen space while making sure the buttons are big enough to be pressed by an equipment user, even when s/he is testing communications signals outdoors wearing gloves in the winter.

Handheld Device Interface Design

Process

In 2014, JDSU reached out to us again to design interface for their new handheld device.

We provided three concepts in the first round, with each option being less traditional than the previous one. Concept C was the least conservative, drawing inspiration from IOS 7’s flat visual language.

Client went for a combination of concept A and B, but the exercise we did for option C proved useful when we started to design more screens and developed the style sheet for the entire project.
